Hahahahaha!
Can't believe anyone wouldn't CHOOSE a M5 over a 550i if they could seriously afford one or the other...
But if you're a 'it's only getting from point A to point B' person I guess it wouldn't matter or you'd choose the 550...but I thought BMW inherently were about the driving experience? Anywho...id go for the M5. And if you're scared about repair bills then don't buy it. Only buy one if you can afford to fix her
Nice options either way!

Most people could purchase a 3-4 year old-er sports car (eg 911, M3, M5) over their current car (e60), but chose not to because for most the E60 is a daily driver that allows them/us to enjoy the "BMW driving experience" without the expense of a true sports sedan.

I have a 6 speed manual 550i and have a blast driving it. Unless you street race, take it to the track or have access to the Autobahn you're really not in position to leverage the full capacity of the M anyway. Add to that the additional care and feeding of the M it's really not worth it IMHO. Of course you can't really put a price on bragging rights.

+1 It's nice to be able to say you drive have an M5 because they are sweet, but if maintaining it properly is of concern, keep the 550i and the cash in your pocket. .

yea. let me be the firs to say its definitely not cheap to maintain the M5. so i fully understand if thats a reason why someone would stray away. but if its within your means to maintain it....then there is simply no choice. to me its like choosing between a cute woman and a drop dead gorgeous one....if both are within your league....you'd go for the gorgeous one right?
