Hi members!

Yesterday a friend passed me this clip :

a) it shows the major agility of the B5; it shows those 150 Kg less, compared to M5 .
Am I the only to notice it ?

b) how is possible that the B5 does't have the LSD, with more than 500 HP and a crazy torque ?
BMW attemped to strangle it in all ways (but on the straight it is still faster) .

Bye!

That VW early on beats them all

Does Alpina do anything to beef up the standard E60's transmission to handle the supercharged V8 or can the stock setup withstand it?

Yup, the ZF box is strengthened, re-valved, they fiddle with the lock-up and the software's different. The rear diff is Alpina spec - the standard one is open - they sold the design to BMW for use in the Europe-only 745d, which also has c.700Nm of torque. There's an Alpina LSD that's now optional on the B5 and standard on the B6.

The B5 SHOULDN'T be more nimble than the M5, as it has a higher polar moment, with that supercharger and intercooler slung out in the nose. It is a bit lighter than the M5, dry - can't figure out quite why. Dry weight of mine, though, was about 1890kg - fairly porky.

To 175mph, a de-limited M5 is probably fractionally quicker than a B5, but not by much. The B5 is quicker than the M5 below 100mph. But it's not so much about their relative pace, more that the two cars go about it in such a radically different way.
