Its getting to be time again for those lovely winter tires. This will be my first winter with my 2005 bmw 530i. I plan on getting winter tires but I would like your input. I live in central New York where the winters are pretty brutal. I have never driven a rear wheel drive car in the winter so I am kind of worried. Should I get studded winter tires?

Studded ones are not legal in US, I'm afraid.

Just check out my sign - the best you can get,
but only in 16".

The next best would be Nokian RSi and they are
availbale in 17" also.

Check out this link.

New Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5's will be available on the
Nordic market this fall.

I have been using Michelin Pilot Alpin on 17" ASA JH3 wheels. They work great in NY snowy and icey conditions. The wheels are not OEM, but are BMW "approved" and are designed to look like OEM. Got them from TireRack, which will offer this and other winter wheel/tire set up suggestions if you enter your car info.

Or, do a search here, as there have been many threads on this subject.

Sam - After moving back from CA to NY 2 years ago with my '03 E39 530i Sport, I soon learned how bad it was to have 17" HP tires on a rear wheel drive car. The car was completely useless on snow and ice. I had several close calls when it came to fishtailing into on coming traffic on single lane roads near my house and found it very difficult to get up the slightest grade roads near my house (and I live in a relatively flat area of NY). I never did end up putting snow tires on the car, but all I can say is spend the extra money on GOOD snow tires. As you can see, I went to the AWD version on my new E60, but I can't imagine that the standard 530 E60 is any better than my old E39. Just some advice from one new yorker to another...

The snow in US is so different - what do I know of winter and RWD's?

1. best is Continental TS810
2. Hankook Icebear W300

I have the 2nd and did 230km/h in minus 10 degrees not bad, sure on the Autobahn and not in heavy snowing, the traction is awesome.

If I do not get the X6 I will only drive RWD BMW, and it is so much fun! Not dangerous, all you have to avoid put too much torque when changing lanes or overtakeing in heavy snow, that it migh swurf but for winter use all the electronics on. I will see now what will happen this winter with the increased tourque.

I have Contis TS810S WR in 245-40-18 up too 270 km/h and they are awesome in handling on dry and wet conditions. They work wery good also on snowy roads and I am very happy whith them. They are little bit pricey but worth every cent

Sam -

Yes you will be fine with dedicated winter wheels & tires on a rear-wheel drive BMW. I have run Blizzak LM-22 and now Dunlop Winter Sport M3 on several BMWs and they both are very solid winter shoes. I also put Nokian on Mrs. Tachyon's Volvo and those are fantastic as well.

Just go get a second set of wheels and put on whatever winter tires you like.
