ive had a look at the x5 wheels and the offset is 42 surely these will fit my 530DSE without too much difficulty the car is running standard suspension?
i really need help with this one guys as there seems to be so many differing opinions?

There are SO MANY wheels available for the E60, I would just select one of them and avoid the headache of ADAPTING wheels to fit!

My only concern is this: When you start adding spacers to change the offset, you're also changing the position of the wheel. For instance, if the wheel is 10.5" in width with a +40 offset and you add a 20mm spacer, that 10.5" wheel will be positioned as if it were a 11" wheel because you're pushing the wheel out to compensate for the high offset.

Here is a perfect example, this M5 had to go wide body in order to fit the X5 wheels:
