Why don't M5/M6 OEM tires work on a 550?

It is the side wall height. That is why the fenders of the M5/M6 are 10mm wider than normal e60/e63s. Also, the M5/M6 suspension rides higher than Sport package e60/e63.
No matter how you do the math, you'll never get the 166 wheels with 255/40/19 tires to fit properly on a Sport package e60. The rear 285/35/19 is doable but you still run the risk of rubbing when you go over the dips on the highway.

That's the great thing about math - it always has to add up!
So if people are running 245/35/20's on the front, overall wheel diameter is 26.75". The M5 rim with 255/40/19's is 27.03", a 0.28" difference. So anyone running those 20" wheels that have lowered their car by more than 0.28" should have the same rubbing issues, shouldn't they?

This is where offsets come into play. The higher the offset the more the wheels are tucked inside the fender. 166 offsets for the front are 12mm. Most 20" wheels have offsets of 19mm or greater. But, you are right some people do roll their fenders b/c of the 245/35/20 tires.

If you run these in the back, you need to run a similar diameter in the front. The there is no way the 255/40/19 will fit (M5/M6 have a wider fender.
You could run a 245/40/19, but you will get some rubbing under full compression. The problem is the offset of the front 166M rims. I shaved off about 2.5mm from the front and only get a slight rub if my wheels are turned under full compression. Has not been a problem, I just have to be aware of turning into large bumps (like pulling into a parking lot).
If anyone has rolled their fenders, please PM me and let me know. It does not look like there is much of any lip on the front fenders that can be rolled.
Ideally, if you could find a 166M replica in a 18mm - 20mm offset for the front, would be perfect.

jsal,
I've rolled all four fenders to accommodate my 20" wheels due the aggressive offsets.

I Have the M6 Wheels on my E61 with sport package. All 4 fenders are rolled and I have no Problems in the rear.
But in the front I also had to expand the inner wheel housing. I had some rubbing above the tire under full compression, in the front of the tire under full steering angle and at the rear end of the tire under full braking. The whole wheel is moving about 1" to the rear under full braking. But no rubbing on metal parts.

Im running 275/30/20 rear and 245/35/20 front... the rear seems fine so far but the front rubs in big dips... im going to try to shave the offset on the front 3-4mm... hopefully it fixes things.
