Question

Just wondered what the maximum the 535d could be chipped to.

I know DMS and others can chip to a reasonable degree taking into account longevity of the engine but as a one off what could remapping really do?

Anyone know?

You could probably get ONE really good run with about 385HP.

yeah but i don't wana know how much the engine will last with that kind of stress! i bet that in 20k-30k miles u'll start investing hard in it. It's a totally insane and killing option IMO...

Agree, I'm not in favor in chiping engines. Especialy this high power 535d I think originaly it has been set well for the best outcome/lifetime.

I think that replacing turbo's in like 2 years (150kkm) will be $$$ cost enough so save your money

when chiptuning my 525d the guy told me (and prove with graphs) he did a 535d a couple of weeks ago that could for sure whip an M5's ass when racing a curved road due to huge torque (approx. 680 Nm)

Smth tells me that guy might be wrong. I mean yeah...hell a 535d chipped to 700NM would be a monster but not enough (not even near) the all mighty M5. Despite te road (stright, curved or so...) the m5 has a high revvy engine wich is very well suited for curved roads. Look at a honda s2000 vs nissan 350z on curved tracks and u'll see that the s2000 si superior on bends because the high revvy engine and lightweight, even though it has half of the torque of the z.

Back on topic: I want to know if the torque is the limitative factor when chipping a 535d?!? I heard that 700NM would be the limit for the tranny? M i right? or the transmission copes with more then 700NM???
And final question: what number (hp/torque) do u think it would be best suited for a 535d emap and not stres the engine too much?

I think it's safe to assume this is exactly what guys like DMS were tying to achieve - 506 ft lb / 334bhp in their case.

My Ride: 2006 535d MSport ; Retired at 110,000 miles October 2010: 2010 535d MSport; Space Grey/Black Dakota, Adaptive Xenons, High Beam assistant, Prof. Nav, Voice Control,SAT, Adaptive Drive, Powered boot, Comfort Access, Climate Comfort W/Screen, Surround View, Side/Rear Sunblinds, Comfort Seats, HUD, Active Cruise, TV, Prof Loudspeaker, Night Vision, Lane Change warning, 4-Zone A/C, split rear seats, Speed Limit Display

Test drove the DMS 535d; DMS told me that they had rolling roaded the car and were seeing 360 BHP and 640lb/ft, but that they were making more conservative claims in their literature. I asked if they would stand by the higher figures if I had my car upgraded, they said yes.

Car drove very well, autobox showed no signes of stress ( dragging, jerky changes, slow changes ) which I've found in the past when driving autos with more power/torque than was good for them.

The software change(no chipping ) increases the fuelling, so I don't see that the turbos would be affected. The bottom end of the engine is a different matter, only time will tell. DMS suggested that they have seen well over 700 lb/ft and over 400BHP, but driveability goes out of the window.

0-60 came up in 5.2 seconds ( 63MPH on the speedo ) with DSC switched on - I didn't have the courage to dial it out - and 50-70 in 2.7 seconds. Throttle response was unbelievable, transition to warp speed would be a good way to describe it.

For everyday driving on public roads, this car utterly destroys my E39 M5 and after a short drive of the E60 M5 ( the dealer seems to think I might break it.. .) I'd have to say it would do the same to the new M5 as well.

Fuel consumption.....in traffic dropped to 30-32MPG, some enthusiasm in the right foot dropped this to 27-28MPG.

Downsides....the ride on the 535d was pants compared with the E60 M5..those run flats will have to go....and the rear disks and pads are going to be shortlived with the amount of work the DSC is going to be doing, expecially in the wet.

So I've bought a 535D, cancelled my order for the M5, and with the saving ( plus a little ) a Caterham CSR for fun might just be the answer.......
