I've heard it metioned before about how some exhaust systems drone. What is drone? is it a certin sound given off by exhaust? If you could answer it would be greatly appreciated.
Yes i used the search bar and found alot of info but none of it is really helping me, i am only asking this because my next mod is selling my exhaust and getting a custom quad setup with mtech quad diffusor.

I have a post with my magnaflow sound clip on here , drone is like some 16 year kid with rap music as loud as you can make it with only subs pointed at ur head-- any aftermarket exhaust will have some between 1000-1500rpm I drive a stick so I can somewhat control it but if I lug the motor I will be droned to death

Exhaust drone occurs when the harmonics of the exaust match the harmonic frequency of the cabin in the car. This drone usually occurs in a certain RPM range. It causes the entire cabin to feel like it's vibrating and it feels like your head vibrates a little. Drone is pretty common when upgrading to a louder performance exhaust. The RPi exhaust for my 545i had some drone but the drone was basically gone after 1000 miles. On cheap exhausts, the drone will actually get worse because the glass packs get burnt off. On the RPi exhaust, the fiberglass packs get nice and packed in which reduces the drone after time...1500-2500 RPM is the most common harmonic frequency in our cars it seems. The stock muffler is designed to muffle the drone or is designed in such a way to have the drone at a RPM that the car can not achieve...say your redline is 6500rpm, designers would design the exhaust to drone at 7500rpm. Drone is very difficult to get rid of because unlike sound, which can be baffled, drone is caused by harmonic frequencies that are more difficult to alter. One solution is an exhaust cone which installed where the stock exhaust is cut, another solution is a ring which just installs in the exhaust tips....RPi offers these

What's funny is I put a bullet style cherrybomb muffler By walker on my e39 it was not that loud and I has less drone than my magnaflow.... And it was cheaper.....

In juxtaposition to Marc's erudite audiophile response, I would just say it sounds a bit like the infamous "Brown Noise" on South Park .
