Is it certain you can't get clear on matte black? I always thought it was just a different kind of clear coat.. but of course I could be wrong.
Man I can't wait to see your kit when its complete!!
I would do something like graphite.. but thats because I'm biased. Maybe you could post up a few potential choices with their appropriate colors. That may help us help you decide.

semi gloss black, gloss black, graphite.
