So I finally decided to try and upgrade some more stuff on my car. It's a pre lci and the lci tail lights look so much better.
So my question is, if I buy a pair of lci tail lights, will they simply just be plug and play?
I also read something about Bruce cables. What are those for??

bruce's cables make the lci taillights plug and play.
Alternatively get an LM2 if you car was built before Sept 2006 and get the adapter cables as show in this pdf.
Will require a simple bit of coding.
What headlights do you have? The LM2 will give you welcome lights as well...

If you only want to upgrade the tail lights only, then Bruce's cables are the way to go. It makes the LCI lights plug and play w/o errors and unwanted tail blinking.
If you consider upgrading also the front lights (perhaps in the future) to LCI type, then you have to consider buying a LM2 and do the upgrade of front and tail lights at once including the LM2 as per original BMW envisioned manner by using BMW upgrade cables. This also will give you some additional functionality as sanjsanj said.
