I wondered if anyone here could help me with a query I have about the twin exhaust pipes. Sometimes I look at them and one valve seems to be closed which makes it look like only one exhaust is letting out fumes and sometimes both valves are open.
This morning a friend alerted me to a rattle coming from the exhaust pipe - it seemed as though the valve inside the exhaust was stuck and was rattling - when i switched the engine off the valve remained open. When i put my foot to the exhaust to press it a little the rattling stopped....
Can anyone advise what the valves are for, whether they should be open or closed when the engine is switched off and what the rattling sound is?
Many thanks

Hi,
Not specific to our 535d's but check out THIS thread about the valve on the 545i. Might provide something.

Thanks - had a quick read but can't get to the bottom of whether the valve should shut when the engine is off. The ticking sound is making me wonder if its getting stuck..
