Got my car back today. Turbo replaced under warranty. No idea what the problem was, as all seemed to be working fine.
Apparently there was a faulty exhaust sensor done too. Perhaps it's related.

The turbo revs more than 120.000 revs/min !!!
ECU remap works on the time the injectors are open + slightly higher turbo boost. This causes higher temperatures in the engine, and the turbo is the hottest part ! Then, as oil becomes hotter, oil pressure decreases. When it starts to whistle, you are sure that the turbo axle had a problem of lubrification ! That can also be caused by too high revs with a cold engine.
The problem could also be caused by a small difference in the weight of one of the component (propeller) in the turbo. That's why BMW is OK for exchange under warranty.
By the way, do you know who builds turbo's for BMW diesel engines ??

Both our 2002 3.0D X5 and 2004 E60 have a slight chirp when the engine is under slight load and only at a secific rpm.
Always been told it is normal.
Schnitzer ECU makes no difference to the chirp.

I'm glad you got it done....................
and exactly as I said.... exchanging the turbo under the warranty would be the best![Big Grin](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/biggrin.gif)

probably because the service people don't do more then they are told to do..... they have no free will to check for a second more then they have to

if you aske them to change the oil, they will change the oil only even if one of your wheels would be missing

Both times they said "your tyres are low". So they must do some checks. But yes, I agree, they will only check what they need to.
The remapping will affect a part of the ECU that isn't checked. I'm presuming that it would take a very low level diagnostic by a special technician or engineer to find the map being different. General service techs just connect their test equipment and press buttons. If the result says "change turbo", that's what they do.
Off to find what run-flat tyres I should be fitting now
