Hi All !

I'm wondering what you guys think about lpg/lpi (liquid gas injection) on a E60. Are BMW's engine's good to run on gas ? Or
will it either harm them ?

A friend of mine has got a 316i, and in the manual was written that the car was good for running on lpg. But it was a 1999 mod.
I'm seeking in the future for a 530i, or new 535i whit the turbo setup.

Anyone that can help me ?

I can't see why it would harm them. I suspect the biggest problem is going to be tuning the engine to run the new fuel.

Dont do it!

I ran a Ford explorer for 120K on LPG absolutly fantastic, I then tried to run a Grand Cherokee V8 on it and 20K miles later both cylinder heads were trashed, what was even worse is that Jeep could not supply spares and a 2 year old car was off the road for 6 months.

I believe higher compression engines dont like LPG!
The major issue is the refueling- LPG tanks are a pain it is just soo slow! (PS most LPG pumps freeze at low temps)

Buy a Diesel if you want power and ecconomy -yes the sound like a tractor but feel the torque!

I love diesels ! So I was totally into the 535D but what the tax concers: 1060? tax a year... For the 535i it would be 650? + the fact I can put it on lpi so it would be cheaper to run. (not that I'm looking for the cheapest way to drive, but I've looked at all facts: 535D does 6.4sec, 535i 5.5sec ?)

Over here they do place lpi installations in all type's of cars, they all ready have serveral turbo cars running on lpi whitout probs.
But when the "BMW know how people" don't have good memmories whit gas I'll have to do it whit the 520D I'll geus

I think the model you are refering to i the 1995-2000 BMW E36 316g, which could be run on either petrol or biogas (or farts) (two separate tanks).

It was a 1999 E46 316i my friend had.
But a 316i and a 535i is a world of diffirence (in power).

I'ts almost like putting lpi(lpg) in a supra or skyline... You don't do something like that
But I drive about 25.000km a year (about 16.000 miles)

My experience after driving 3 different cars on LPG: Some engines have absolutely no issues with LPG because they can handle the higher combustion temperatures by design. Others, more marginally designed engines with "sensitive valves" can be a disaster.

Good experience:
My previous car had the 2.0i PSA 143ps engine, which never had any engine issues and ran fine on LPG (no difference at all when switching between gas and LPG). I sold it at 220,000 km, no problems at all. The engine was still running as new and consumed absolutely no oil.
LPG costs 50 eurocent a liter here, and it ran 11l/100km, so running costs were very low. It had a large tank, built in at the spare-tire slot, which gave me >500km on a tank (pretty good for LPG).

Bad experience:
3 cars ago, I had a Citroen Xantia with the 1.8-8V engine, running on LPG. It was a disaster. These engines normally cause no problems, but on LPG the cylinder head needed to be replaced/revised every 40,000km or so. The valves simply couldn't withstand the high combustion temperatures. This has been confirmed on forums by many people with the same engine on LPG, this is simply a very bad combination.

My advise for the E60:
I wouldn't do it for 2 simple reasons:

1) There's hardly any experience with E60s with LPG, and my experience is that the only way to tell if a car runs well on LPG is by observing similar engines that have run on LPG for a couple of years. You simply can't predict how the E60 engines will behave at the higher temperatures.

2) The 520d is very good, and is priced very competitively compared to e.g. a 520i or 523i + LPG. It doesn't feel like a diesel tractor, is fast enough for normal driving and has low running costs (compared to similar sized cars).

My 2 cents: Just go for the LCI 520d with 177ps engine...

Hi all !
I've read your posts and have seen justin's tread.
All by all I gues the 520D in the end will fits me best, no installation costs, more place without the gas installation, Diesel power (177pk), no extra lpg taxes,...

And the last thing I want is a totally f*ck*d up engine ! (But on a 2.0 N/A engine it prob. will not harm, PROB...)

Tnx guys for the coments so far !
