My Ride: 2005 bmw 530i titanium silver premium and cold weather packages.... ready to do some minor work and still keep it sexy
i just purchased 19 inch 166 m5 rims and im so confused with the tire sizes
the dealer told me to put 255 30 19 in the front and 285 35 19 in the rear...
the old owner of my rims has 245 35 19 in the front and 285 30 19 in the rear
my tire shop told me to stick to 245 35 19 in the front and 275 30 19 in the rear
how does this really work and what is the best size for my car... i have a 2005 530i.
this is so confusing.....
p.s. i looked at other threads and all they did was confuse me more so im looking for a cut throat answer. :-)

In theory you can put any of the tire sizes. I wont not put 255 in the front, I would go with 245 35 19 & 275 30 19. You can also run 285 30 19 but i dont know if they might rub
Also, if you are looking for good summer tires for the M5 wheels, go 2 tirerack.com and pick up the General UHP tires. Around 600 shipped for all 4 tires, 245/35/19, and 275/30/19.
Good luck, and post pics once u mount them.

OK , take a deep breath many of us have been through this and this is the answer. If you check out pics of my car this is exactly what I have on my 166s and BTW this is the factory supplied tire that was on the 172's that I swapped to 166's.....
Fronts 245 / 35 / 19
Rears 275 / 30/ 19
Absolutely no rubbing or any issues and I think it looks great ....
Good Luck

I have the 285/35 in the rear with sport springs and do not rub! Its close though. 255/30 in the front will ONLY work on M5. I saw a M5 2 days ago and the 285/35 had better clearance and fender gap spacing than mine it like another inch or so higher

There are a range of tires that will fit a certain wheel/car. The lower the aspect ratio 30 vs. 35 the lower the sidewall/wider the tire.
The lower wider tires give better traction at the expense of the ride. The goal is to keep the overall diameter close to the OEM size to keep the computers sensors etc happy.
Any of those sizes will give you more traction than you will ever need.
I would go with the smaller sizes, 275 vs. 285, and 245 vs. 255. Less chance of rubbing, less stress on the steering etc.

Hello,
The correct answear is : 245/35/19 in the front and 275/30/19 in the rear. You can do other sizes but the correct aspect ratio is critical for the front wheels.
In these sizes, the best tires for less money are General Exclaim UHP. The 245/35/19 are available but 275/30/19 are hard to find.
Check the link below:

Let me know if you can find the 275's
Thanks,
Georgio

I have the following on my e60 530i with BMW OEM 166's:
Front: 245/35 - R19
Rear: 285/30 - ZR19 (98Y)
Getting the right tire size sometime can be a pain in the a?s but mine dont scrub or anything and are doing well, and I hope this helps you with yours!!

The choice of tires is pretty easy. To get a perfect balance you have to match the front tires diameter with the rears. As it has different width (fronts and rears) your goal is to find which sizes have small difference in diameters.
First you need to check the OEM tire diameter: 245/40-18" - 25,7" diameter
Now lets start finding for the front:
235/35-19" - 25,5": close tire diameter but if bmw chose 245 for 18", lets seach a wider tire.
245/35-19" - 25,8": seems even closer to oem than the previous size and same width as oem too.
255/35-19" - 26": it is farthest from oem diameter. Taller tire means more weight and if you lower the car you could face rubbing issues. And we chose 19" wheels to accomplish with a lower profile tire. For a mid-profile tire i would keep the 18".
For the rear:
265/30-19" - 25,3": Too much lower profile. I don't want to crack or dent a wheel in the first small road pothole.
275/30-19" - 25,6": close match, and plenty of tires to choose in this size (21 options in tirerack).
285/30-19" - 25,8": Also a close match and the perfect size to use with the fronts 245/35-19", but only there is a very few tires to choice with this size (only 4 options in tirerack). Wider tire means rubbing issue if you put spacers on the 166's (a must have for the rears) and lower the car.
My choice was easy: Front 245/35-19" and Rear 275/30-19", after all, this is the sizes that BMW put on 19" in non-M5 cars. But i also could never choose the 285/30-19" because it would rub.
