I have the same question. My 550 sport came with 275 35/18's on the rear. I am switching to an "M" wheel and am leaning toward 285 30/19 for the rear. They have a 19mm larger circumference, which is 0.006% larger than the stock tire. However, the recommended tire, 275 30/19 is 6mm SMALLER, thus 0.003% smaller than the stock tire. Both should fit width wise.

The only problem that I've been told with the 285 is that they will give slightly greater understeer. Has anyone else experienced this with 285's on the back? I hope to be placing my order tomorrow, so your feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks!
I fitted the 166M rims with 285/35 and 245/40. I wanted to fill up the wheel wells (without lowering) and keep the side wall ratio between the front and the back the same (35 on back/40 on front or you can go 30 on back/35 on front).

The back completely fills up the wheel well and is a big meat - I like it. I loaded 400 lbs of rock salt in the back and drove hard as well as doing a bounce test with no rub issues - the fit is perfect. The front is close. I can get a slight rub on the front of the plastic well (which if it bothers me I will pull the plastic in a bit) I have only heard it while making a sharp turn over a bump/dip. I have not noticed any fender rub and from doing a bounce test, I don't think you would unless you where going like a bat out of hell at full wheel crank (typically only happens right before a crash and at that point, who cares).

If you want to keep the overall tire diameter as close to the same between the 18's and 19's then go 275/30 and 245/35. With my setup, I am off about 5% (at 70 mph I am going 73.5).

I have not noticed any change in steering, although I have not shaken it loose since I got the new tires. I did notice that it is harder to get the first to second shift chirp/slip - they definately seem to have more grip.

Personally, I think based on the width of the rim, a 285 looks better. I would have preferred a 255 on the front also - but that will not fit unless you drop down to a 35 series (in which case I was more worried about the look of different sidewall heights). So, if you are worried about steering changes, doing a 285/255 setup would have less effect (same width tires that are on the M). According to my tire shop a 255/35 should fit.

The only thing I noticed is that the offset of the front tire is really made for the wider M fender. The tire is right out to the edge of the upper part of the fender. I would have preferred it to be a little more inset to give a bigger staggered look.

I will take pics this weekend and post on Monday.

FYI: I was going to get PS2's but the 285/35 was not available yet. Michelin lists it, but they where saying 6 weeks. So, I went with the Continental Sport Contact 2's, which where cheaper and have a higher treadwear (according to the manufacture). So far I am impressed with them.

Indeed! How about 305/25/19's or 315/25/19's (These sizes are available!)

There's a great calculator here TyreCalc

So the 'original' 245/40/18's, here are the possibilites:

Tyre code Diameter Circumference Difference
265/35 R18 643 mm 2020 mm -1.61 %
275/35 R18 650 mm 2042 mm -0.54 %
285/35 R18 657 mm 2064 mm 0.54 %
245/40 R18 653 mm 2051 mm 0 %
255/40 R18 661 mm 2077 mm 1.22 %
265/40 R18 669 mm 2102 mm 2.45 %
265/30 R19 642 mm 2017 mm -1.78 %
275/30 R19 648 mm 2036 mm -0.86 % 19" OEM Rear
285/30 R19 654 mm 2055 mm 0.06 %
245/35 R19 654 mm 2055 mm 0.14 % 19" OEM Front
255/35 R19 661 mm 2077 mm 1.21 %
265/35 R19 668 mm 2099 mm 2.28 %
265/25 R20 641 mm 2014 mm -1.94 %
275/25 R20 646 mm 2029 mm -1.18 %
285/25 R20 651 mm 2045 mm -0.41 %
245/30 R20 655 mm 2058 mm 0.28 %
255/30 R20 661 mm 2077 mm 1.19 %
265/30 R20 667 mm 2095 mm 2.11 %
I too am trying to figure out the best size for the #166. My original tire size was 225/50 R17 which means that the better fit would be 245/35 R19 (-0.41%) and 285/30 R19 (-0.49%)! For comparison the 275/30 R19 is -1.4% compared to my original tire size, so it all depends on what the original size was! I guess the speedo is not exactly accurate to begin with!

I would go for the bigger (in diameter) size as I find the back tire looks too small when compared to the front from the side view.

I went with the 285s because the 275s seemed to small ... my 19inch rim is 9.5 width. The car looks a lot better and understeering is not noticetable, well I had to increase the tires pressure in the front to compensate so I'm running 34 psi front and 35 rear... car, handles great ..
here is a pic of my rear
