Just one month ago I installed a paddle shift system on a M5 steering wheel on my car.

I am really delighted with the change. Now I can use most of the car?s potential, by choosing the rpm range for every shift with no compromise.

There is only a small "but". The reaction time is a bit too much.

Some friend has told me about the existence of a retrofit alternative box interface for the Steptronic gearbox, which seems to be able to reduce shifting times by about 40%!

I would be very much interested in this possibility. Should any of you know something about this device I beg you to advise me!

Sounds like this is referring to the new steptronic gearbox - not sure of a retrofit but it would be expensive either way!

Not so expensive. He told me about a "Lttle" box, developped by someone in California (?), which cost was about 300 Euros (400 USD).

Yeah! He said that the difference between new and old steptronic box is just a software improvement. An external chip should cope with this task.

It might be true for manual mode. What I'm thinking is just a simple comparator or buffer placing between shifter and EGS. When EGS see the slow falling edge of the EGS_UP or EGS_DN signal, it shifts up and down accordingly.
EGS_UP/DN falling edge might be slow, so a high-speed buffer would help. Whenever it senses a falling edge of EGS_UP/DN, it'll trigger the output right away, and this might cut some propagation time.

I was just my guess. But to solidify it, we must have an oscilloscope to measure fall time of EGS_UP/DN signal. If it takes, 1s to fall from 90% of VCC to 10% of VCC, we might need to search for some high-edge rate buffer to reduce fall time from 500ms or so.
However, I'm not sure about EGS module propapagation time. That might be the most important factor? I guess.
Right now, I don't have an oscilloscope, so I cannot do anything
Let me do some research and get back to you. It's a very interesting problem, but, you know what, we can hardly beat BMW engineer in this department.
