Ive been slowly noticing a shake / vibration in the steering wheel between 35-45 mph. At first I thought maybe my wheels werent balanced correctly but I put my stockers on for a road trip and have the same shake. I know on my 3 series I had to replace the front control arm because the bushing was wore. I can tell its coming from the front end for sure, anybody have any advice or experience on this subject? I looked up the susp breakdown on realoem and see there is 2 "control arms" on each side, is that the only bushings in the front end? Do they wear easily/often? Of course I searched the forum and couldnt find anything because the search engine is very picky. Any help is appreciated...

Search for bushings or control arms replacement, there are several good DIY on it. If not I'll post the links later tonight for you. Damn iPad.

Bushings usually clunk, you can feel them in the floor board of the car. When stopping feels like the car lunges forward, car tracks on bad roads,

If none of those happen then it could be wheel, hub bearing, strut or endlinks, tie rods, balancing is usual culprit when speeds are specific

great info....just had an alignment so I know its not that. Absolutely no noises/clunks/surging. I just switched between my oem 249 19s and my stocker 18s for a road trip and its doing the same exact thing so I highly doubt its balancing. The only thing you named that I am highly suspect of is the shocks/struts. I put h&r sports on my stock non-sport struts awhile back and Im starting to feel the shocks letting go more and more. But I didnt think shocks would really give me that feeling in the steering wheel?! Do you think thats possible?

definitely possible if your struts are shot. You will feel the vibration more but still inspect your bushings though. Depending on your mileage but my front left bushing has minor cracks at 70K miles but I'm just too lazy to get to it. It's on my to do list as of now.

I was experiencing a similar problem with 45K miles on. Fluttering in the wheel not felt in the brake pedal. Took it to the dealer and explained the problem. They relpaced the bushings and the front rotors. Like new now. From what I've been reading the liquid filled bushings are prone to crack and leak. Longevity in the bushing is sacrificed for smoother ride I suppose.
