Space Saver Wheel - Original or generic?
Hi,
I am now looking for a space saver wheel for my '59 E60 520 mSport. Can buy from BMW, but it is fairly dear, so I have been looking for other options (eBay,..). I believe the tyre need to be 135/80/17, however, I suspect that the shape of the wheel itself cannot just be any shape, it has to be roomy enough to accommodate the brakes. Is this shape specific to BMW? Is there a standard spec that some manufacturer adhere to allow buying from generic suppliers? Or do I absolutely need and E60 space saver wheel?
Many thanks!

Not sure on the shape, my guess would be that you'd be able to find a non-dealer source for one that will fit.
Also, I'd try around salvage yards and find a wrecked E60 being parted out that has a spare - could probably get it very cheap that way, and you'd know it fits. As long as the spare wasn't in use during the time of the wreck it should be fine.

How long and how many miles do these last if actually used? I had to use mine a fw years ago due to bending a rim. and when I installed my spare I actually needed some additional air. It was about 50% low I guess. While I was at the tire store having air added, they told me that these tires are only good for X # miles of actual use. My actual travels were 200 miles and I remember this distance excedding what they told me. It got me home just fine and it's actually still in my trunk well. I probabl should have a look in the manual and see what it says. I was thinking they were just trying to sell me a tire!

I have a spare that is the wrong size for my car,, it came with a 17" (full BMW wheel and tire) but my car uses 16" I need to swap with someone, or sell my spare and get a 16" either full size of space saver. But I am in San Diego.

Spares leaking air quickly is pretty common, in my experience. They're generally aorund 60 psi instead of 30-40 psi for full-size tires, so the air leaks out faster. it's good to check it every month or two.
