Just got my first rear wheel car (E60 520dSE Auto) and have been warned by colleagues in work not to use the works car par when icy or snow on the ground as it is on a slope. Last year 3 BMWs all got stranded at the bottom.

Seen some snow socks from a seller on ebay for ?45 for 17" wheels which seems a fair price to leave in the boot just in case. But;

a) are they any good; anyone ever used these?
b) for emergency use only; is one pair on the rear going to be enough, or must I have front ones too ?
c) are they 'use once' only as another thread has suggested; I was under the impression they could be reused, if not for ?45 I'd rather pack a spade !

Cheers, Jon

Cheers, I looked at snow chains, but snow in the UK is quite rare these days, so chains not needed.

The snow sock seemed the 'just in case' option, on the off chance I do get stuck somewhere.

But if they can only be used once, then a bit dear for getting up one hill, especially if they don't work much.

In the UK the use of winter tyres are marginal even up here in Scotland, but I find they gives so much more traction to make them benefitial for the few months where the temperature is in single digits.

The traction control would be constantly flashing with the standard run flats but with the winter tyres there are no drama and they just get on with it. perhaps you should have a look at a spare set of tyres? failing that a bag of salt for the boot!
