My friend is giving me his new K&N filter from his 325xi E90 with a N52 engine. He decided he did not want to install it lol. So should I bother installing it? I am planning to do the charcoal delete and install RPI scoops.

personally i wouldnt. i've used the k&n before on other vehicles, and never noticed a difference. plus the oil from the k&n filter may get on the maf sensor, and give false readings. i'd just take out the charcoal filter and make sure you have a clean paper filter.

I also use one and I noticed that I get slightly better gas mileage. If you plan to get the RPI scoop the K&N will match nicely as it is fairly similar to the bmc filter that rpi recommends.

My K&N engine air filter works nicely with my Borla cat-back system. Adds a little air intake sound level too at WOT. Oil the filter media every couple of month and a little each time, wash once a year and you should be fine. Over-oiling at any time will cause MAF sensor issue. I have a GM vehicle at 11 years and 146,000 miles with Mobil 1 and K&N engine air filter with zero engine issues. My E60 has the K&N air filter for almost 40,000 miles.

However, if one drives in a dusty or sandy area, a K&N air filter is probably not a good idea.
