when you installed the Z4 shifter, did it make your throws shorter, or is it just sitting lower. Note: sitting lower doesn't necessarily mean shorter throws. How is the crispness of the gears? I have a 535xiT 6 speed with M-Sport Package, I assume that 550 lever is the same as in my car?

Regards,
~Andy
We do have the same lever.

The throws are definitely shorter and super crisp.
The space between the ball and the lower hinge is shorter which makes the throws shorter.
I'm sure my terminology is incorrect but i hope get the picture.

I would like to but I work all weekends.
You need to get your priorities straight.

how expensive was the lever and how hard is it to change out the lever? when I removed the boot, it looked like the lever has this rubber piece all around it that is glued to the floor. thx.

Wouldn't you want the length from the "ball" to the "lower hinge" to be as long as possible?

I realize the overall lever length is shorter, but if we were comparing equal length levers and all we did was move the pivot point down to shorten the "lower portion", wouldn't that increase the length of the throws from above?

shortening ABOVE the pivot point and lengthening BELOW the pivot point both result in shorter shifts, although lengthening below the pivot point is more effective (ie 10mm longer below is more effective than 10mm shorter above.)

dusandimic and Andy- did either of you notice your shifter is way off center now? when I installed the z4 shifter in my car 5th was almost unengageable because it hit the top right corner of the opening, and 2nd lay just about where neutral is with the stock 373 lever. I'm going to have it bent to the right angle, just haven't had time. the diesels might have a different lever than the gas cars without the bend in it, I don't know.

here's a picture. the 373 lever is roughly equivalent in length on both ends to the z3 2.8/3.0 shifter, but with a bend in it.

The lever cost around $60 and it took my mechanic 30-45 minutes to do it.

I did notice what your talking about. It doesn't really bother me. It goes into 5th smoothly and i still have 1/4 inch of clearance.
I also noticed that the stock lever was bent when i got it back. I though this was odd,

How long does it take to get used to the short shifter? I put the Z4 shifter in but I can't say that I like the feeling on the single drive I took with it.

they're kind of tight when you first put them in. I've started putting some caliper grease on the selector rod now when I install them. helps out quite a bit. you have a diesel- was your stock lever bent from factory or is it straight?
