I've done it 3 times in my car, myself and from inside. The most difficult part is trying to take the circlip out without dropping it. The best thing to do is tie some thread around it before you try to even take it out. That way it hangs off the thread when its off. Do the same when putting the circlip back on.

I wish there were some pictures around of this install...I am thinking of installing a Z4 shifter, anyone now how much they go for?

Thanks, I found your comment, the pictures helps a bit. Does the shifter attach at 2 places? On the bottom and the middle of the shifter?

just a reminder- while yes, you can do this completely inside the car, I strongly recommend you put the front end on ramps or jack stands so that if something does happen to fall into that deep dark cavity that is the rest of the transmission tunnel, you can easily get under the car and retrieve it. Because if you do drop something and the car is on level ground....it's not fun to get it up.

the only connection, per se, is at the bottom. once you remove that clip, you have to pull the selector rod off the shift lever and then you need to twist the white carrier that the shifter is resting on 90 degrees CCW. the shifter then pulls right out.

Thanks for the advice! I think I am ready to do this...
So what do I actually have to buy from BMW? just the shift arm? Do you have a part number for the z4 3.0L shifter?
