I have attached a photo that may help. It shows how the "foot" of the rack sits on the roof. The entire bottom of the "foot" has rubber on it. The inside is snug up against the ridge on the roof. I find it works well and was not expensive, imho. Hopefully this helps.

The roofrack is great!

We use it for skis, during some trips to the alps in the winter

I don't have any damage to my paint.

Suspect I should have bought the BMW one's anyone able to take a picture of the bmw roofrack feet would like to see how different it is and tell me what it made of. Towbar is an option though seems a cool idea as it would stop the roof getting muddy

Thanks for the feedback the Thule racks are usually good quality and the accessories like the bike holders are excellent.
Here you are...

Thanks for this I can see why it doesn't damage the car as in the most part it doesn't touch much of the rood like the Thule rack does

Thanks for this

I agree, the old E39 system (also used now on the E90) was/is awesome.

Even though the neu E60 system appears not to damage the paint, it looks like retrograde...again, IMHO

Agreed, I could have my Thule racks on my old 3'er in about 3 min flat... flip up the tabs, pop them in place, a few twists the allen and bammo, ready to ride 800 miles. Now it takes me about 10 min single handed, and isn't as trim an installation.

As requested here are the pictures of the patches. First test today as I went mountain biking not it just damages the plastic and not the paint now so that's a success

i have an oem bmw bike rack for an e60 if anyone is interested. i bought it new but quit bike riding so the rack is in brand new condition. i have the mountain bike and the street bike accessory. you can add other options to the rack system.
