Replacing OEM radio with Apple Carplay system for 04 530i
Anyone have any experiences with any of these brands/products?
- mr12volt
- Joyeauto
- Andream 8.8"
I really wanna upgrade my entertainment system so I can stop listening to the damn radio. Any feedback is much appreciated!

Hear Andream is good. I went with adding Bluetooth to the aux line to play Apple Music. It wasn't worth the premium price to add a system to me.

Hi,
I have a 530iX, 2005.
I installed the Andream 8.8. You only have to replace the original display (you need to have the full-size display version of the CCC!!), and all original CCC features stay available. But please, put an anti-reflection layer on the display before installing. The glass is super glossy and difficult to see in bright lights.
Very happy with the system: although I had an issue and only found out when everything was taken out. I have no AUX. And I don't mean "not activated in SW", no the hardware doesn't support AUX. I believe before the LCI version, BMW in their wisdom decided that AUX was an hard-wired option. I have an executive trim, w/ a 2 slot CCC (CD & DVD), but no AUX. Mind you, this car was 90k + euro back in 2005 and this option was not standard :-).
And you cannot know for 100% until you have dismantled the dash and taken out the CCC system. One potential trigger is the absence of the audio-in plug in the console, but not 100%. The plug depends on the trim. To be sure, you need to take the CCC unit out and look at the connection plug, and you will miss some wires. It took me a week to google and understand, but sadly I cannot find the internet pages anymore, sorry.
If there is no AUX, you need to install an FM receiver. The sound is decent (you hear the FM noise at high volumes), but the Bluetooth option is terrible, and sometimes you get interference (broadcasting from regular stations).
On that remark, a question: I do have the CD changer prepared. I believe there are solutions to use that interface. I have never tried it. Can that be an option?

I have a Pre-LCI prod 12/04. Mine did not come with aux. Either way it still has the capability on the plug and your CCC. Identify the slot and create the plug. Once done enable aux

I have one of the Andream-like MMI boxes and it has worked really well (I also did a CIC retrofit so I have a higher screen resolution). I just bought a Mr12Volt system this weekend and will install in the next few weeks. I've been watching this thread for many months and finally decided to bite the bullet as it looks like they have been releasing firmware updates and fixing problems. Mr12Volt and Joyeauto both make retrofits for CCC which I assume you're running. @Anthro got a Joyeauto for his CCC (I think) and was happy with it. I decided to get the Mr12Volt because it gets updates and I think the sound quality should be improved going through MOST rather than aux-in. The MMI I have is supposed to be able to connect to the iDrive knob to get it's bus signal but that wasn't working which means I had to use the connection at the back of the CIC unit. This isn't really a problem for most people, but I like to program/code my modules now and then and I currently can't code my CIC with it hooked up this way so I'm looking forward to gaining that back.
I used to have the Avin 8.8" unit and it worked well but didn't meet my objectives. I don't like loosing any stock features at all and the screen brightness controls in the OEM menus no longer worked. Also, if you want to use it as a touch screen I found it was too far to reach. Fortunately it worked well with CarPlay and the iDrive knob. However, I find my MMI box connects to CarPlay a bit more reliably than the Avin unit did. I use CarPlay 100% of the time (wireless) and love it.
