My Ride: 2006 525XI, Jet black on Dakota beige. Premium and winter packages. I consider myself a purist and intend to keep my car absolutely stock and shiny. 2008 328I Convertible, Sapphire black on beige interior. Premium package, NAV, iPod adapter. Retired: 2002 325I, Titanium silver on black leather. Premium package. Absolutely stock and proud of it.
Thumbs up

Thank goodness for warranty. In my four months experience with my 06, 525xi, I've had a tranny and blower motor replaced, and now the steering rack is being replaced due to the squeaking noise many of you are familiar with (I researched it in here). My question is, if these components have gone bad after 3.5 years of use and 39K miles, does it mean that they will fail again in 3.5 years or do you think/know if BMW has redesigned these parts for better reliability?

Of particular note, this car is a previous lease sold to me as a CPO. Repair history was remarkably clean with mainly maintenance history showing on their records. Am I just unlucky or was the previous driver just not as perceptive and in tune with this car as I am? Maybe people who lease are not as anal as owners?

All opinions are welcome.

I had only 27,000 miles on my car when the tranny said goodbye. I asked the tech guy and he told me that most mechanical replacements are refurbished. My tranny was refurb and my steering column most likely too.

Like you said, its luck sometimes. These things is a "hit or miss". Some can go many miles without a problem and some needs to be replace constantly. Good luck!

I have never leased a car, but if I had, I would definitely drive it harder than one I purchased. I changed my oil at around 5800 miles on my 535XI. Would I have done that if the car was leased? Nope!
It all depends on how the previous person drove the car. It could have been a fluke, but perhaps they pounded the car more than you would ever think of so those parts might last you for the life of the car. You never know.
