Hey guys,

My "sound insulation mat" under my hood is falling down on all edges. To order a replacement (Part #51487148208) would run about $120. I'm considering just removing it, and not replacing it. Since the mat is intended for primarily for sound insulation, is there any bad consequences for not having this in that I'm not thinking about? I suspect there wouldn't be, but I have searched around and haven't found any topics on this.

Any info appreciated.

Thanks,
Patrick

I'm not 100% sure...but I think it has another purpose. I think it drops and snuffs out an engine fire, if one should occur.

My E90 and E60 has the underhood insulation. As kt mentioned, it is designed fall onto your engine to retard any engine fire. The newer E90 do not have the insulation. I'm assuming that it is safe to run without the insulation, provided there are no wiper motor or wiper fluid lines directly exposed to the engine heat.
