Yes, I believe laser jammers are illegal in CA (actually in all states, I believe).

The lidatek is a laser jammer that is illegal in some states, not all, but California is one of them.
A radar jammer is regulated by the FCC and is Illegal in the US.

Ur title says Radar Jammer, but u refer to a Laser jammer. I am not aware of anyone on this forum using Radar Jammer. As stated, illegal in all states. Radar detectors, on the otherhand, are legal in about 48 or so states. Only one I know of for sure that is illegal is Virginia. I used mine there about 99.9 % of time and was seen by state, county and city troupers without ticket (removed electrical connection each time).
There are web sites that u can serch for that tell u all this.

My Ride: 2004 545i - 6 speed manual (July 04 build), silver-grey/black, sports package std equipment (18", active roll, active steering, adaptive headlights), premium sound, bluetooth enabled, folding rear seat, lumbar, 3m hood/bumper protective film, rear tint, euro reflectors.
I know of alot of radar detectors and Laser Jammers - but no radar jammers.
Usually radar detectors are fine as you can pickup the radar long before you are hit, unless you run into a rare instant on situation.
Laser detectors on the other hand are worthless. Since the laser is pin pointed at your car (usually the license plate), by the time you detect it, it is too late.
I am in the process of installing a built in radar detector/laser jammer on two of my cars - mainly because I want the built in radar detector. Right now, only about 3% of the law enforcement is using laser - it is very expensive and luckily used rarely. On my portable system, the only time I have picked up laser detection is near a couple of airports.
On my laser jammer, you can shut off the jamming after you detect the signal and adjust your speed. I am not sure if law enforcement can detect this or if they can spot jammers. Mine are hidden pretty good.
I would be curious what the penalty of having a jammer is.

Which model built in? I am scheduled for a K40 Undetectable - radar detect and laser jammer - next week. I selected it due to the minimal interior impact over say the newest BEL offering, although it (BEL) seems pretty comprehensive in its abilities. We devised a plan where they will be using some blank panels that I can replace and pull everything out when I trade for the M6.
I will look up the model tonight and post it - it is a Beltronics. Last time I looked, it was not on thier website. Belltronics owns Cincinatti Microwave, so the unit is essentially the same as the Escort model. I went with the BEL because thier displayed looked better.
You can install them without the display showing - the expansion kit has a mute button, speaker and led. I installed the unit in my Yukon, but have not done the install in my 545 yet (working out a few warranty issues before I start pulling things apart). I do not have nav, so I was considering using the little cubby hole where the NAV CD is usually mounted - but have not decide yet.
