Hi,
I just returned from a 3000km trip through mountain and prairie highways. Followed the #1 highway from Vancouver, BC to Regina, SK and came back through #3 Crows-nest to Vancouver. It was an awesome trip and before I left I researched Radar Detectors. (my last drive I ended up with a hefty ticket & in BC if you drive 40KM over the speed limit they can impound your car for three days!!!)
I didn't want to spend much as I would not be using the detector for anything else but road trips. I ended up purchasing the Cobra 9345 https://cobra.com/detail/xrs-9345-14...ta-display.cfm
I was a little sceptical at first, but I am now a believer! There were four situations that I would have ended up with a ticket. Most memorable was a Pontiac Grand Prix who was a jack@#s driver and ended up whipping past me after I slowed because the detector went off. The Grand Prix got pulled over and I comfortably got back up to cruising speed. ;-p
It has very few false alarms and a really cool self mute function. Sells for 100 bucks Canadian and for half that in the states. The only downfall is that you need to pull down the rear seat arm rest so that it can scan behind the car as well.

Whoa, 14 bands? Are they essentially variations of laser, Ka, K, and X?
I am a newbie when it comes radar technology, so if someone else can chime in, that'll be awesome.

nomis_nehc ...i am not an expert either. All i can say is that it worked on Laser Gun and what ever radar the RCMP and city cops use here. ;-)

vbcguy, you need to do a research on what RADAR is and what LIDAR is.
Bottom line, if the cop uses a lidar gun, with your current setup, your screwed !

In short, when the cop uses a Lidar gun, what happens is that he shoots a very thin a focused laser light on your car. As soon as he shoots it, your radar detector(if it can detect it that is) will start screaming. But it will be too late for you to do anything since the cop will have your speed in a millisecond. So all the time it takes for your radar detector to detect the lidar, and sound an alert the cop would have had your speed by then.
Does that make sense ?
Look up Escort 9500ci and you will know exactly what I am talking about

That's true. Radar detecters do not make sense. You need radar/ lidar distracter. Which I think is illegal in most places.
