Talking Pre-LCI Halogen to Pre-LCI Bi-xenon AHL

March 2012, I purchased a pair of dynamic, Bi-xenon headlights to replace my halogen ones. The set was already a steal at $510 but they also came with the xenon and adaptive control modules! I successfully coded VO 522 to my car and had been using the headlights for two years without adaptive functionality. I recently thought. What the heck…it would be nice if the auto leveling and adaptive features also worked! So. I started my research….

  • Car assessment - My car came with pre-lci halogen headlights. I have no preinstalled wiring for the AHL (3 pin) plugs and no wiring for ride height sensors.
  • Wiring – Google searching, I found a few relevant retrofit documents and found that BMW sold E60 xenon retrofit wiring harness 61120306080 but discontinued it. I decided to use the wiring diagram from E60 B-Xenon Retrofit doc 63120398577 as a basis to create my own harness. The doc recommended 0.5 mm2 and 2.5 mm2 wires which are equivalent to 20 AWG and 14 AWG wires respectively. I bought a 20 AWG kit for wire.barn on ebay that had 8 colors of 25’ each for only $32. I bought 14 AWG wire from Home depot.
  • Wiring map – Since I wasn’t using the same wiring colors as recommended in the doc, I wrote up a wiring legend to be sure I knew what wires went where.
  • Running the wire - I didn’t know the length of the wires for each run to various places so I just ran the cables and cut them to the length I wanted. My biggest issue was running wires to the passenger headlight. I decided to remove the air filter housing and open the fuse/adapter box beneath it. Using the old ‘hanger tied to the wire’ method, I pushed the hanger thought to the fuse box. I then poked a small hole through a rubber protective cover from the fuse box and pulled my wires through to the headlight and tire well. There was nothing tricky about running the other wire, just a lot of work.
  • Making the connections – I had to buy the correct connectors to fit in the pin slots of the LM and crimp them to my wires. I again follow the doc to the letter, plugging the wire exactly where stated.
  • Appearance/Protection – I did want the job to look like it wasn’t from factor so I bought multiple roles of black fabric tape and wrapped all wires for protection and for the factory wiring appearance.
  • AHL – the E60 B-Xenon Retrofit doc 63120398577 did not reference AHL wiring so I found Retrofit AHL (Adaptive Headlight) doc 63120412059 in German only. After translating it, I found that it was nearly the same as 63120398577 with just two differences, grounding LM wires 58 and 59 to 56 and running a twisted pair cable to the LM. I did that, the proper coding and bam! I now have fully functional dynamic bi-xenon headlights.

hi! xonreh

It is a very good job!

I am also working to retrofit adaptive headlights.

Now, most functions is working properly.

Two questions here

· Did you follow the connection of 71 & 72 PIN fromPT-CAN?
· Did you follow the correct connection of the LIN-BUS 16PIN from RLS?

It does not establish a complete action If you do not do this connection?

Thanks!

Hey,
I know this is an old thread but does someone still have those documents or guides on how to retrofit bi-xenon AHL? I would like to have a diagram of how the headlight level sensors need to be wired and what is needed to get the adaptive headlights to work.

Thanks.
