Dumb question, how does this part fail in the first place?
If I'm understanding it correctly and the part being discussed is the control arm rubber bushing, it fails very easily and often on the e60s. Basically it is a rubber piece that wears out as you hit potholes and so on. When the rubber... err.... rubs down, it gets harder and eventually causes a near metal-to-metal contact. Your steering response sharpens to the point where it feels like it over-reacts to every little imperfction on the road, there's pretty much no muffling of the impacts from potholes and bumps, front end feels like it comes undone every time you hit a big enough bump/pothole. Also, in some cases there is rattling and vibrations to the steering wheel.

plain old wear and tear. There's alot of bushings throughout the chassis (lower control arms, upper control arms, engine mounts, trans. mounts, shifter bushings, etc)

They are usually made of rubber and tend to develop cracks which leads to a "mushy" feeling in the steering and the rest of the car. On the other hand, that wear and tear does make the ride "softer," with urethane bushings you def feel everything in the car alot more. But that's what I like
Correction: control arm bushing failures lead to making the car feel like there is no bushing at all. I've had mine replaced about half a year ago and I can vouch for this one.

My Ride: I have an 05 545i. It's a manual with a few options. This is my first BMW but I don't know how I'll ever be able to switch to something else.

Correct V.

However, I was talking about getting PU bushings for the WHOLE car, not just the control arms. I found another company that makes lots of bushings for other cars, including BMWs. They have the 5 series covered up to 2004 and that's it though. I sent them an e-mail asking about making some for our cars, I let you guys know what they say.

Here's their website, PowerFlex
