I would think it is possible, but it will be one of those features only the dealer can activate. Plus it's gotta be expensive with all the extra wiring and the button on the dash, eeesh!!! Good luck with it.

I know that BMW offers a license plate surround frame that includes the PDC sensors. It must be programmed at the dealership. This might be a cheaper means of retrofitting PDC as compared to changing the bumpers and running aires, etc.

didnt even know the license plate PDC even existed till now... I wonder how it works, if it even connects to the iDrive and can be switched off.

Need to research on this further. i think this will be a better (not to mention cheaper alternative)

Your better off doing a backup camera.

Backup cameras are nice but they don't give you the same feedback. Plus $118 is nothing for something like this.

@earl_je: Please let me know what you find. I might do this next week when I have my car in for service.

I know it's a little late of a reply but I bought the license plate PDC, my review of it is that it gets the job done but poorly (about a 3/10). There is nothing special about the BMW lic. pdc as opposed to any generic one found some where else.

The way it works is, you connect the power to the reverse white lights that turn on when in reverse. drill a hole in the trunk to run the cables to the license plate frame, place the little speaker in the cabin and thats about it.

I say it is poor because mine is already partially broken, the controller unit leaks power through so there is a blood curdling beep that you have to constantly listen too. I have had the unit for about 8 months now. So I just put the little speaker in the trunk and all is well with the world. I no longer hear the beeping and I could barely hear the sensors in reverse but yet it is just loud enough to hear the sensor when it really counts (i.e. in a tight parking spot).

I would highly recommend the back up cam system from modmynav.com

Just got my install done (thread upcoming shortly) and am more than impressed.

I do like also having the PDC sensors, but the back up cam is sweet.
