Need a quick education on painting brakes. I've seen several on the forum. I have a white 550i, and I'm thinking about having my brakes done in red or white. White might get to dirty from brake dust, so I'm leaning towards red. Will have the guy who is doing the other body work do it. What's involved? What type of paint? How long does the paint last?

Most of the people I've seen have used a kit from Dupli-color. I did mine about a month ago. It wasn't very hard -- I was switching over to the summer tires & wheels so had to have them off any way.

I went with silver which doesn't stand out at all. Plus the box was messed up so it was on a clearance rack for less than $5! I would have considered gloss black and think it would have looked nice. I like red calipers on some cars, but it would be a little too flashy for me on this car (these aren't beautiful calipers to start with, so I don't know that I would want to call that much attention to them). I don't think I would like white.

Mine are holding up fine so far. Here are some pictures.

do you have to remove the calipers to pain them, or do you just tape off the rotor and paint them?

It's brushed on paint. Nice coverage and smooths out really well. Needs to dry 2 hours to reinstall wheels and 24 hours to drive.

I had planned to remove the calipers, but once I looked at it there really wasn't any reason to. I did remove the clips and painted them by themselves. I masked off the brake lines, bleeder valves, and the rotors near where I was going to paint. I also taped off the back of the pads, but in most photos you can see that others haven't (doesn't really seem like it would matter -- just wouldn't be painted any more after changing pads, I just wanted a more "OE" look so keep them unpainted).

Great feedback! Thanks JBJ!

Duplicolor kit is great! Just clean it good with spray brake cleaner and just be careful- did mine Blue- very lose to BMW blue... It's some type of epoxy paint. I also clear coated the hubs to keep them new. Have fun.
