I really like the Focal K2 series of component speakers, and they come in 4" components too

If they slip right in, I might go that route. Focal speakers are very high quality.

Those with SWS-8's under the front seats, driven by a 6-channel amp should be nice.
i have the focals and earthquakes, really recommend them. having component speakers really really makes a difference!

I have Focal Polyglass 100 V Slim for the front and back. The sound quality is excellent!

No any 4" speaker would not just fit right in, at least w/o some mods. I think the MB Quarts and Focals may be the only drop in 4" door speakers, to the best of my knowledge. I know I bought a set of Autobahn components when I did my upgrade, and they didnt fit in the rear shelf locations, and I didnt want to modify the parcel, so I went out and bought the MB Quarts. Popped right in....however then the MB Quart tweeters were too small, so I used the Autobahn tweeters and wholla!!

As Bruce had said before, just adding the earthquakes, an amp, and some tweeters will be a HUGE difference and not too pricey as well.

GL and let us know how it turns out

Take a look at the Hertz speakers also. Great speakers and you can get them at WOOFERSETC.com The local stereo shop says they make a 4 inch 2 way component set that fits in there. I am also looking to upgrade and beginning to investigate. let me know if you get them and how they sound. pictures also please.

here is what i did, i bought 4 unused (old school made in germany) MB quart qm100's on ebay and machined some ABS brackets so they would fit exactly like the stockers. i spent about 200 bucks on woofers, tweeters, and x-overs. took me about 5 hours to machine all the adapters.

No external amp, so the speakers must be driven directly off the head unit.

What are my options for improving the sound system?

Anyone here upgraded their base system with the BSW package (amp, speakers and subs)?
