Er, actually there is! The 'run-flat' hub is of a special shape to hold the tyre in place better in the event of depressurisation. It's called a 'EH2' ridge.
However, 'normal' tyres will fit.

My Ride: '04 545iS 6 spd, bought new via eBay, 11/05; Blk/Gry, Cold, L7, PDC, BMW Rear seatcover for pets.
First "Bumwa" was a new 1971 2002. High performance 5s since 1987. Beamer motorcycles too, currently on an 07 BMW K1200 GT; also a Moto Guzzi 1000 SP III.
Let me rephrase what I said then:
There's no such thing as run flat only wheels.

Well, actually there is a Run Flat system--From Michelin, that features a special wheel and tire. It's complicated and heavy, and obviously BMW chose to dodge that bullet, so that traditional tires could be mounted in their stead.
Cheers,
Ray Hull
