I wouldn't try a paint install myself, either, even though I've done 3 headlight installs. The stuff is really sticky, can stretch out of shape, etc.

For the iDrive cover, you just pop the knob off and decide how much area you want to cover. I didn't have confidence in my ability to accurately cut the whole console out, so I opted for the immediate area around the knob. That way, I had liberty with the shape of the template.

Plus, the film is very very clear, but does have a slightly rippled texture, more than the wood finish. I'm not sure I'd want that texture for the whole console.

Andy, there is a learning curve to applying this film. It takes a bit of stretching. My installer had only installed a few before mine so I looked at some of his work first. I would be hesitant to try a DIY.

Jim, I think you're right. "Sticky and stretchy" sounds already to me to be out of my handyman league..

I find it strange to say the least that this stuff is not available/promoted in Europe. <_<
As if you don't have stones flying off from trucks ahead of you. Looks like the small BMW paintkit for the chips and marks....again.....

OK, so it pales in comparison to the news on Bluetooth, but here's an easy DIY.

I noticed that the wood on the console around the iDrive knob has been starting to show scratches, curved around the outside of the knob.? Not sure if it's my wife's fingernails or the guys at the carwash, but the car's only 3 months old, so I wanted to stop the damage.

I cut a template for the area surrounding the knob, cut it out of 3M clear bra material, and placed it.? It's barely noticeable, and should stop the wood from being damaged.?

Here's the template
Attachment 2948

Here it is after installation
Attachment 2949

Cost almost nothing but a half hour of effort.

How did you remove the iDrive knob ??

Thanks,

Lift up - it just pops off and snaps back on. Try putting the tips of your fingers under it and levering from underneath, if you can't grip it.
