New UK member here so please forgive if this topic has already been done.

I've just bought a 2004 e60 530D Auto which has a really thin multi function steering wheel? BMW have quoted me silly money to upgrade to the sports fatter version. Any ideas where else I can get one?

My Ride:

I ordered the sport steering wheel upgrade at timeof purchase and it was 70 quid option, so I would be surprised if a retro fit is considerably more...?

Thanks for response Andy, but BMW have quoted ?1300 for the wheel, airbag and fitting. I was wondering if I could buy a new one elsewhere as I can have the fitting done myself - or even secondhand at a push!

My Ride: '05 525iA, silvergray, steptronic, Active steering, PDC, sport seats, beige dakotaleather, poppel trim, M-sport steering wheel, star spoke 123, xenon lights, large clima, cruise control.

In Sweden there was two options: Leather sport for $ 125 and M Sport for $ 275. I have the M Sport and it?s a very nice steering wheel.

Hi Nicky

Unfortunately, if your BMW has the standard steering wheel with a hexagon airbag (instead of a round one), then you really have to change the entire wheel. This will consist of the following:

1. New wheel rim
2. New round airbag
3. New multifunction buttons left and right side
4. New lower half plastic trim
5. Re-code car to tell it of the different airbag.

The rough prices of these items are:

1. 350
2. 400
3. 80 each = 160
4. 30
5. Zero

So the total cost of parts will be around 1000 + VAT + fitting if the dealer does it. They will charge about 8 units of time , approx 2 hours.

Cheers Hobi,

Your costs for the steering wheel are spot on with the one I got from BMW. I'm getting a company car in Jan 2006 - thinking of a 535d! I'll make sure I order the sports steering wheel though. I guess I'll make do with the 'spaghetti hoop' on the 530d for now. Suppose I could look out for a secondhand one though?
