They passed a law a few years back in California where it's illegal to tint any of the front windows no matter how light. So you're basically SOL no matter what. Most people swear by the 35%, but I would recommend getting lighter especially since you have a black car and dark interior. And because you're a young male and drive a nice fixed up BMW, the cops will target you because they're jealous that you drive a nicer car than them. Just the luck of the draw for bein' a young pimp.

But you can take the tints off yourself. I've had to remove my tints before to pass a fix-it ticket. All you need is a razor blade. Cut a slit and start peeling away. It will take about 10-15 minutes to do both windows. Good luck!

Someone posted a few weeks back that 70% in the front was ok (in CA). http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=29378

Who's right?

I thought I heard that all cars come with the windows pre-tinted at 70% from the manufacturer? The lightest available tint is 50% which by the way is still illegal in CA. 50% is what I have all around and it doesn't attract the police's attention at all.

Nevermind what I just said previously. It seems I can't find a consistent answer. 70% is the lightest tint available. Cars do not come with 70% tint embedded in the front windows.

I have lighter tint than 50% in the driver's door but still rejects heat better than my 20% in the back =P
The ones I have is 70% V-kool, very cool. When I look from the inside, it's slightly darker than the windshield, I honestly don't think you can notice it from the outside at all. Haha that maybe too light to some of you....

My dad's retired LAPD, so that's where my information is coming from.

I run 54% on my side windows for the very same reason vegastrashed does. I used to have 35% in my old ride (which was also black) and I got hassled by the cops all the time.

For California

The main requirements for legal window tinting in California are:

The windshield and front driver's side and passenger's side windows cannot receive any aftermarket tinting.
If the rear window of a vehicle is tinted, the vehicle must have outside rearview mirrors on both sides.

The law prohibits any person from driving any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows, with certain limited exceptions.

However, legislation signed into law effective January 1, 1999, exempts from the above prohibition specified clear, colorless, and transparent material that is installed, affixed, or applied to the front driver and passenger side windows for the specific purpose of reducing ultraviolet rays. If, as, or when this material becomes torn, bubbled or otherwise worn, it must be removed or replaced.
