My Ride: '08 535i w/Sports Package

My 2008 535i Navigation DVD drive is apparently failing. It has recently started to not be able to read the GPS DVD. The error message, "Please Insert Navigation DVD" starts appearing on the GPS Screen when in navigation mode. I can remove and re-insert the DVD a couple of times and then it will start to work again...for awhile and then the problem re-occurs. I've cleaned the DVD and used a DVD drive lens cleaner, but the problem still exists. I've tried the DVD in another Bimmer just to make sure the disc hasn't gone bad, but its fine in the other car. If the DVD drive does need to be replaced, how difficult is it to do it myself and is there an aftermarket drive available? The car is out of warranty and the dealer wants several thousand dollars to do the job. Any suggestions?

Im in the same boat too bro, it sucks, FUCKING unreliable POS if you ask me. I have CPO on my car, but they wont fix it because the NAV/iDrive is not covered under the warranty. I've never seen a NAV drive go bad before. These cars are plagued with problems like this, this just happens to be one of them. Sorry to rant, but I know exactly how you feel. If you get any pointers or help, let me know. This is beyond frustrating.

I have a 2009 535xi and my DVD just went bad as well. I got the same error message. Still under warranty so took it to the BMW dealer and the tech said it's a common problem.

me too, easiest fix for this is to find someone that can change the lens for you, if your sure its just the lens thats failing it can be replaced for probably couple of hundred bucks....

Stupid question: tried different DVDs, right?
Navi not being covered by CPO is one of the reasons I actually decided against it...
Good Luck, guys!!!
