Hi Guys!

I've been making the rounds speaking with multiple folks the last couple of weeks about what kind of exhaust to put on my 08 550i. I've learned a lot in the process and many thanks to VT, ECF, Freedom, Nerweezy and the many others who have been gracious with their time and answers. I have also spoken to Collins at D2 Tecknik, Will at EuroRev, Fabryce at Global Motorsports and Phil at AAA Exhaust --who have all offered various opinions. I think based on my wants, my options are limited but thought it better to garner an opinion from y'all.

My goal is two fold:
  • More aggressive Euro Exhaust Note (but no droning or cabin intrusive ricey sound)
  • Maintaining Low End Torque as much as possible while upping higher RPM performance
I'm not into a Quad as I think it's best on an M5.(NO offense to the guys with Quads on their E-60's--most of them look great). What I have learned is that all but three exhausts will lead to loss of low end torque due to various factors. Clearly, adding an exhaust is usually about improving the sound. So many people go with Eisenmann because of it's distinct and noticeable sound.

I was told that on scale of Loudness with a stock 08 550 as the baseline, increased exhaust note went like this:

Dinan-AC-Hamann -20% louder
Remus-45% louder
Eisenmann -100% louder

Clearly all of these can be improved upon with resonator deletes.

What I haven't been able to determine is just how much torque loss there is with a Remus Muffler versus an ACS/Dinan/Hamann? Does anybody really know?

I'm one of the few people who prefer to maintain low end torque understanding sound improvement at wide open throttle will not be as noticeable.

So based on what I want there are 3 Exhaust Options:

Dinan
AC Schnitzer
Haaman

What I'd like to ask you guys is of my preferred options, what do you think is best?

Dinan and ACS are both about $1400 installed. (quotes I've received from Eurorev). Hamann is about $600 more. (A Remus muffler is about $850 installed in comparison.)

All 3 manufacturers are of the highest quality obviously. I haven't heard any of them on a 550i. I have searched Youtube and here but have only found 545i clips.

If anybody has heard any of these on a 550 and can't point me to sound clips, I'd be most appreciative.
Your overall opinions and info are also greatly appreciated.

I plan on going to the So Cal meet in December but am hoping to have my exhaust installed before then. ( I just can't wait)

So Cal

I put the exact same question to my Dealer today ! I want a more aggressive sound and the balanced look of a quad without impact to torque/performance and warranty . The issue of bumper vs valance or diffuser is likely more of a personal preference ..... In my case I like the diffuser, I like it better than the ///M5 bumper , but thats me ..... excellent summary BTW .

Cheers

AC = Remus, for information purposes. We manufacture the exhausts for ACS.
We will have further information from ALB regarding fitment on the 550i.

Our inlet size is slightly bigger to slide on the current 550i piping and to be put in place with a solid clamp without leaks.
There should not be any power loss, gains should be expected.

I should note that Remus makes AC Schnitzer exhausts and Supersprint makes Hamann exhausts. For that matter Supersprint also makes RDSport exhausts.

The thing I'm unsure about is if the designs are exactly the same across the brands or if Hamann, ACS and RDSport "develops" the specs and outsource the manufacturing process to Supersprint and Remus. In my particular case, the muffler casings on my RDSport Competition exhaust looks exactly like the Supersprint Race exhaust and there are people who think the two systems sound exactly the same even though they didn't know the relationship I noted above.

All this may not help you to determine which has better low end torque but if the theory is true that they're the same designs, it would pose the question of why pay more for a tuner name?

Food for thought...

I would say the advantages are uniqueness and tip design for ACS.
I cannot speak for Hamman/Supersprint/RDSport.

Good point. Remus and ACS offer more unique tips but Supersprint/Hamann/RDSport only come in one "round" style I believe.

Here is the thread that was started by andy545 two years ago that shows Eisenmann having the same butterfly valve as the OEM exhaust. All other aftermarket exhausts do not have this valve that I know of. I think this is what you're looking for SocalM5Mang.

Thanks ECF and Matt. You bring up a solid point ECF.

Matt, so you're saying the sound of Remus is essentially the same as the ACS? The only discernible difference are the tips?

I can't wait until you get the data on the 550i install from ALB.

That's correct.
Again, there should not be any power loss as our diameter is even slightly bigger to slip on the OEM piping.
I'd be more inclined to say there are power gains.

I've heard most of these on a E60 in person (although some a long time ago)
I 'd say the scale is more like this:

Dinan, Remus/ACS, SS/Hamann, and Eisenmann for regular E60 ~ 35% louder
B&B ~ 50% louder
Eisenmann for M5 ~ 100% louder
