That is a cool look ! I couldn't quite get what you did until I went out to look at my X5 . I'll bet some after market guys borrow your idea,

The original poster did not brush anything, it looks like he sparay painted the middle slats and left the chrome frames alone, thus achieving the X5 V8 look.

Did you paint the entire center section silver (like the X5) or did you just brush the chrome edges? I brushed the chrome edges as well as the chrome frames a couple of years ago and I like it much better than chrome. I was going to paint it silver/Titan if I did not like the outcome of the brushing, but I liked it so I just left it at that. Here are some pics:
