That is a cool look ! I couldn't quite get what you did until I went out to look at my X5 . I'll bet some after market guys borrow your idea,

I did not actually use a brush to do the brushing. I used a combination of Scotch Brite abrasive pads and sandpaper to rub the chrome until the shine came off and was replaced by the grain lines from the brushing. See my post above for the details.

The original poster did not brush anything, it looks like he sparay painted the middle slats and left the chrome frames alone, thus achieving the X5 V8 look.

I brushed the chrome edges as well as the chrome frames a couple of years ago and I like it much better than chrome. I was going to paint it silver/Titan if I did not like the outcome of the brushing, but I liked it so I just left it at that. Here are some pics:
