I hope that this list represents a helpful compilation of the issues that one may encounter when changing wheels and tires.
In my case, I was changing OEM 17" wheels on a 2007 530i to 19" Staggered #166s.

(1) Choosing Replica or OEMs---you may need hubcentric rings with the replicas to avoid vibration
(2) Tire Pressure Monitors--you will need to replace them (before putting on the tires)
(3) Springs--to lower the car if you do not have the sport package (and even if you do).
(4) Wheel Spacers--consider for a nicer look.
(5) Decision between 275/30/19 and 285/30/19 for the rear wheels in 19" sizes
(6) lower tire pressure to avoid harsher ride when moving from the softer 17" wheels
(7) Understanding that 19" tires are expensive (I used General Exclaims which are a good cost effective choice)
(8) Get the new tires balanced by a Hunter 9700 machine (high speed balancer). Do not settle for anything less.

Anything else I missed? Or any differing opinions?

I hope that this list helps others who are considering the changing of their wheels. I thank everyone here (the real creators of this list) for contributing their input on all of these issues that I faced.

All the issues have been worth it to get the beautiful wheels...

Thanks for the list... I'm still looking at new wheels after a year... Also wheels are so 'abundant' in thailand, finding the right one is hard. I like a few designs that they don't have for E60, for those that they have, they don't have the right sizes and offsets. Its pretty hard... I'm still looking for wheels!!

Thanks for the useful checklist. I, too am about to upgrade wheels and tires. Should I have the dealer mount and balance the tires or can any shop w/ a Hunter 9700 do it? Dealer quoted me $180 to mount and balance 4 tires. Same question about the tire pressure monitors: are these pretty routine or should I have the dealer do it?

Any tire shop with the Hunter machine can do it. Based on my experience with my dealer (who is clueless about tires), I would go to a place that specializes in selling aftermarket wheels (many here in Miami). To be honest, I am still trying to track down an answer on the sensor issue. My dealer was clueless about the new 2007s requiring a sensor, although I may have to order through them. I will need to rebalance the wheels again when I put the new sensors on, but I am looking forward to it because one of my replica tires had the little taped on weight fall off.
I am still checking with Walt at TireRack about the sensor, but I found one BMW OEM place that sells the sensors for $41 each.
Personally, I am going to avoid the dealer for the wheels, especially since mine are replicas. If your wheels are OEM, the dealer may be the place for you to go.

Keep me informed about what you do and how it went.

Richard

full list all you need is to do, may be also balance them if needed, but this is except I would not lower the pressure at all

I'm pretty sure TireRack sells them and they're cheaper.

If you are changing size and/or going to a staggered setup from all four being the same you should investigate the change in offset, if any, and the range of offsets that would be acceptable in a non-oem wheel. This may also allow you to "push" the wheel/tire combo out some (within reason) for esthetics without the need for spacers.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Why should tyre pressure sensors be different depending on the tyres they go on? Something is not quite right here.
