Michelin is running hot weather tests now on run flats. The following announcement was made this week in the Lone Star BMWCCA chapter forum:

"For those who don't know: Michelin is conducting hot weather testing of
their development tires in a few southern states. They are currently
soliciting volunteer testers among the LSC members. As a tester, you
will get a set of Michelin tires and wheels. 17" wheels look a bit like
E46M3 ones. Then they ask you to drive them as you normally would. Every
2-4 months Michelin will invite you to drop by their facility in
Grapevine to allow them to measure the wear. Their facility is a
non-descript industrial quarter of Grapevine around 114 and South Lake.
If you have a '99 or newer 3-series, contact Michelin's Dave Lane at
(817)-915-6114 and arrange for an appointment to have either 16" or 17"
(225/45/17) Michelin tires _and_ wheels installed on your car for free.
I believe the 16-inchers are run-flats while the 17-inchers are more
performance oriented, though a step below the PilotSport level."

I would be happy to test 18" tires with wheels for them in the Netherlands.. I am anal about shuddering cars so that is a problem that can be found out by me quickly

What is the reason you guys are wanting runflats? I don't see the benefit of getting runflats over non runflats...I much rather have a good ride and low noise and handling over runflats...of course if that comes with runflats and the price wasn't inflated i take both.

I had a very bad accident wich was caused due to a possible right tire blow out at full acceleration (tire was repaired after a punction 2 weeks before), I believe I could have saved myself if I had runflats.. (it is a believe).

Plus more room because no spare tire in the car and you don't get dirty hands when your tire is flat because you can drive it to your dealer to get it replaced or fixed..

Sensing of tire 'flatness' is automatic on E60. It works for both run-flats and regular tires. If the tire gets a leak, you get a warning supposedly (I haven't experienced it yet) before you can feel the problem if you are driving at the time. After driving on a soft tire for a time, the high temperatures can make it 'blow out' suddenly. If the leak is a slow one, with the warning alarm, you will have a chance to stop at your convenience, assuming you can feel the change in handling enough to gage the rate of loss of air before the tire is dammaged.
Now, to my question. Assume you have a low tire but not enough to set off the alarm. Driving at high speed on the highway heats it up and the pressure increases significantly. Will this increase in pressure trigger the alarm the same as a reduction in pressure? If so, then you are protected because the potential high pressure blowout condition will send a warning.
