mesh insert for stock bumper-hpim2355_more_compressed.jpg

I will probably end up with an ACS spoiler at some point, but wanted to do something to liven up the front of the car for now. Made a mesh grill insert to change the look a little from stock. Let me know what you think -- then I'll show what I'm considering for the second part of the mod.

It looks great. If you make extend the mesh to the sides, it may look better. Kind of like the upcoming facelift bumper.

Thanks everybody.

I didn't think to take pictures as I was making it. The materials were not that expensive, but it took a lot of time to make! It is a heavy guage of mesh and I made very careful cuts with a Drimmel tool (going through about 20 cut off wheels!). I have worked on classic cars a lot over the years, so I am used to painting smaller parts for restorations. I used a high quality self-etching primer, then a very tough epoxy top coat (Eastwood chassis paint). I then edged it with a narrow black door edge molding. I used black plastic tie straps to hold it place -- they hardly show, but it would be even better to drop the front underbody panel and tighten them from the back. I have materials to do 2 more -- make an offer if you are really interested, but would take me a week or more to complete. If I make another one I will also do a better DYI for it.

OK, back to my car. I thought about trying to add mesh to the sides as well, but was afraid that might be too much of a good thing for me. You can buy a 3 piece set from Race Mesh for $150 -- it is a lighter weight square grid mesh, but probably would have gone this way rather than making it if I wanted all three pieces.

I always liked the silver horizontal bars on either side of the center mesh opening on my e46 330i:

What do you think about using this idea for the e60. You have to use your imagination to play along here (it would not be purple tape!). I would probably use some gray-silver paint I have that is made just for plastic trim. Let me know: or  ???? I'm not sure what I think yet, so value the input.

Naw, imo I think that would only look good on a silver car...or body color match.
