So since I've been considering which wheels to get for my 530xi, I've been doing some digging on the issue of what maximum wheel and tire sizes BMW officially supports or recommends for E60. Here's what I've found for the US models:

Code:
525i/530i/545i/550i

Front ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Rear
Tire: 245/35-19 ? ? ? ? ? ? Tire: 275/30-19
Wheel: 8.5 x 19 ? ? ? ? ? ? Wheel: 9.5 x 19

525xi/530xi

Front ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Rear
Tire: 245/40-18 ? ? ? ? ? ? Tire: 275/35-18
Wheel: 8 x 18 ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Wheel: 9 x 18

530xiT:

Front and rear
Tire: 245/40-18
Wheel: 8 x 18

M5:

Front ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Rear
Tire: 255/40-19 ? ? ? ? ? ? Tire: 285/35-19
Wheel: 8.5 x 19 ? ? ? ? ? ? Wheel: 9.5 x 19
Now, obviously, there are a wide variety of other wheels and tires that will fit. And if you stay within the original aspect ratios, offsets, and dimensions of a supported wheel and tire combination, obviously there are likely to be no issues. This is just information about the maximum sizes BMW officially supports and recommends.

The reason I began looking into this is because the xi models seem to have a different setup for the front and rear hubs. Not only is the car 14mm higher, but the hub stance is wider (by a distance I have yet to determine). This means that when some of the 19" high offset wheels (e.g., Style 166) are fitted, rubbing can occur. I've found a couple of members with 19s on xi models who have had issues with rubbing, and some who have had no problems at all. Ultimately, I suspect that it's a really close fit, and that some 19s with a particular offset and a particular size and profile of tire will in fact work just fine. But based on this, and due to the fact that I don't want to even deal with rubbing issues and possible fender rolling on a brand new car, I'm going to probably hold off on the Style 172 wheels I ordered and maybe consider Style 124, which is an officially "recommended" size for the xi models. (I'm going to have the Style 123 18" wheels in the meantime anyway. )

Anyway, just thought this information might be helpful or interesting to some.

Dave,
Any idea why the xi models have wider front hub stance?

I'm guessing it's because of the additional drive components to the front wheels...though I haven't been able to get confirmation of the exact reason why.
