For the E39, there was an accessory you could order to protect the lower part of the engine of the car against rodents getting in and chewing up wires, etc.. Part# 82 10 9 416 587. I guess it's like an electric fence that shocks the rodents trying to get in.

Now, is there such a thing for the E60? I think I need it to keep safe!

This is all I could find, but it's for the E39:

The Marten Protection offered on the E39 consists of a Hi-Voltage transformer and several insultors and wire. It basically creates an "electric-fence" that covers all of the open spaces under the car. If a rodent tries to get into the engine/transmission area tey get a shocking revelation. There are a couple diffent part numbers for the E39 depending on the Engine. The instructions for the kit are listed in the BMW EBA, and it looks to be fairly easy to install.

Interesting device ... but with the battery limitations of our cars I think this thing would kill the car before it got the rodents!

I dunno... for some places, rodents are a serious problem and replacing the battery at a sooner date is a welcome result than a 1000 dollar repair job cuz rats chewed your cables connecting your car computer to the other parts of the car. It's happened to a few of my friends.

Also, any one have a pic of the bottom of the car (engine area)?

One of our Family friends had issues with them and Ferrets in Germany.....The would climb up in to his S Klasse and wifes SL ....The S class was a wright off. Engine damage , the SL got some damage...

The put "Chicken Wire" inside to keep them out on all their cars now...

The critters like the warmth apparently.

chicken wire? you mean on the undercarriage beneath the engine? Is it possible to 'wire' it all up or are there gaps where the tires are, etc?

I was near my wife's car (Lexus RX 300) and there was a strong odor of "death" near the engine compartment . I looked underneath and saw a lump of fur sticking out. It was nasty - I believe this is what happened: a squirrel crawled into the engine compartment and when she started the car, the critter's tail got caught in the belts, and that was it.....By the time I got to it, it was a mix of fur and meat tangled in the engine.....I had to literally pull the mess out of the car with sticks and a hanger. It was FOUL!

Here it is after I had pulled it out...... Call me crazy but I don't think the air conditioning ever smelled the same...
