hi guys,

just purchased a 2005 545i last week, so new to the forum.

the day after i bought it went to the muffler shop, had a straight pipe installed..... loudness when reving perfect but the drone was a killer, so i got a Magnaflow installed.

result.... very quiet, sounds loud on low revs but when you really want it to sound loud up top its not very loud at all.

i still have the 2 canister looking resenators up front and the Y resinator at the back. ive read so much things and am confussed now...

to amp up the sound, should i be removing just the rear resinator? or front 2 only? or all?
any help would be appreciated, im booked in again tommorow morning for round 2

thanks

Welcome to THE forum for E60!

I removed everything (front cans, center muffler and rear muffler) after my cats and installed magnaflow 11385 in place of the front resonators and 2.25 piping all the way through to dual exhaust w dual tips each. I was concerned about the exhaust sounding too loud but, as soon as they fired it up, it was a no brainer, I kept it as is. There's a nice little rumble at idle but when you open it up that V8 comes alive! It's loud but not obnoxiously. There is a drone somewhere in between 1300 to 1500 but not always. I think this is how you would like it. Good luck. PM if you want pics however, you need to have a minimum of 5 post I believe.

thanks heaps mate, appreciate it. sounds like exactly what i want.

can you email me some pics please? zlatnasto@hotmail.com

just with the rear magnaflow, i do get a pretty bad drone inbetween those revs aswel, i wonder if just removing the rear X resenator will improve the sound up top?

ive heard the rear twin resenator mutes the sound up top? and rear mufflers are for down low

so after changing 3 different mufflers on the rear i have finally found one with minimal to no drone!!!

magnaflow, low drone but wasnt loud at all
small glasspack hotdog style - very loud and a masssssive drone, i loved the sound i even went to the effort of sound proofing the boot but the drone was too loud still.
larger 3'' straight through glass pack muffler- done the job real nice smooth note, loud under throttle, minimal drone! i have a 6 speed auto hence the drone on all mufflers.

happy now
