Hi,
I've received a few questions about M5 mirror retrofit question in my PM box. Instead of replying to each of them individually, I decided to create a public thread here.
Please note that once you install M5 mirrors, you can only have whatever function on your old mirrors. For example, if you did not have folding function, but your M5 mirror has folding function and you also buy window switch cluster with folding switch, it still ain't gonna work. Or puddle lamp function that some of you did not have and want it, sorry it would not work either.

Anyway:
If your car was built BEFORE 09/2005, you need to buy pre-09/2005 M5 mirrors.
Pre-09/05 mirrors has three connectors and when you buy M5 mirrors, make sure it also has 3 connectors

If your car was built IN or AFTER 09/2005, you need to buy post-09/2005 M5 mirrors.
Post-09/05 mirrors has ONLY ONE connector with THREE WIRES, so when you buy M5 mirrors, make sure it also has only one connector and has 3 wires.

To install, you need to disconnect battery neg cable in case you accidentally disconnect side airbag which trigger airbag fault on iDrive.
You don't need to completedly remove door panel. It'd great if you have a helper to hold door panel for you or holding the shade for you while you're installation (Cough: BoBoB cough - Thanks BoBo.

Regarding installation, if you live within driving distance of San Jose buy my530i a few drinks and he'll do the install!

Fred, my pre 09/2005 M mirrors haven't had thread for the bolts on the mirror body (triangle plate). Did you noticed such a problem on yours?

Yeap. My brand new mirror did not have thread on those 3 screw slots at all, but I did not have any problem with installation. Just screw in the hex bolt and it just sticks to it

Does the "auto-fold" refer to when you try to back up, and the passenger side mirror folds down to show the rear wheels?

No, it is the whole mirror itself folding up after you park your car.
