Hi All,

I just received a set of M5 Euro door modules for my M5 mirrors yesterday.

So i was so anxious to put it in.. I forgot to disconnect my battery... and what do you know... I received a darn passenger fault airbag message on my car.

Only way to fix that is bring to dealer to reset faults....

That's the least of my concern...

Once the modules were both installed.. I tried pressing the "fold" button for my mirrors, didnt work.

So i was like, what da hell... Why isnt it working?

Then I realized, when I purchased the mirrors, It came with two harnesses, not three... (pictures at the bottom will explain).

Now, the harness I am missing on the mirror, could this be the folding harness / option? Or is it that my car doesnt have it?

When I took off my old OEM mirrors, they had three harnesses and all plugged into my door.

This is the exact mirror I have, (This is Cwest's mirror, the pics I had before installing doesnt have the harnesses) If you notice, it only has two harnesses. (the purple harness is missing)

And the picture below is three harness on another M5 mirror (euro left hand drive)

Is the mirrors at fault for the no fold? or is my car at fault? or is it cause the modules never worked to begin with?

any help will be appreciated... Thanks!!

pre 09/05 cars have 3 wire loom and require a 3 wire M5 mirror.

post 09/05 cars have a 2 wire loom and require the 2 wire M5 mirror.

a post 09/05 M5 mirror on a pre 09/05 car will not fully function...

what year model do you have and was the correct m5 mirror version delivered to you and did you have fold in function in the first place ?

I have a 2004 530i (09/2003 production date)

The mirrors were said to be pre 09/2005, which was sold to me.

I never did have folding function. I bought the european M5 modules for that purpose.

I thought the post 09/2005 was one harness? I saw a few m5 mirrors with just one harness, and the pre 09/2005 with three harness.

darn.. I think I'm screwed unless I get new M5 mirrors.

Here is my attempt to bring some light to your case:
Post 9/05 mirrors have 1 connector with 3 wires
Pre 9/05 mirrors have 3 connectors. One connector has 6 wires (this is where the autofold is - it has 5 if no autofold). The second connector has 4 wires and the third one has 2 wires. If i remember well the two wire connector is the electrochromatic function of the mirror glass.

What you can check is:
Take the glass out of the mirror and look behind it. If there are four wires connected to the mirror then you have heated mirrors plus electrochrom glasses (i.e. auto dim).
I am assuming you have the paddle lights and the mirrors auto dip when reversing.
In order to be 100% sure you have autofolding mirrors take the mirror covers out and look for a motor at the mirror pivot point.

I do see the motor in the mirror, and its greased up.

I will check the wires tonight to verify this (6 wires in one of the harnesses).

Anything else I should or can do?

I checked WDS and the wire you're looking for is pin 6 of the connector. The whole connector supports the following:
pin 1: Voltage supply, horizontal mirror adjustment
pin 2: Ground (usualy a brown wire)
pin 3: Voltage supply entrance lighting (paddle light)
pin 4: Voltage supply, vertical mirror adjustment
pin 5: Voltage supply, outside mirror heating
pin 6: Signal, fold-in outside mirror

Ok.. i checked my harness on the mirror... turns out its 5 pins.. the 6th one is missing, just like you said.

I am screwed... bah..

Is it possible to wire up a wire from the 6th pin to the motor of the mirror?

And another question... how come that wire is missing? did the seller take it out when he painted it or something? really odd huh?

Btw... Thanks for the guidance... You've guided me this far and I'm greatful for it.

Here is what i think its the case.

I believe these were never autofolding mirrors. (if you dissasemble the mirrors should be a part number sticker on the mirror frame). I believe the correct part number is 51167897565.

There is no way to wire the 6th pin as the second motor (pivoting) is missing. What you're probably referring to is the motors just behind the glass responsible for the horizontal and vertical move of the mirror glass. The pivoting motor is inside the pivot and not really visible unless you fully dissasmble the mirror.

I dont believe anybody took the missing wire out. I believe these were never autofolding mirrors in the first place.
