I called my BMW parts department and they couldn't tell me if the M166 wheels were forged aluminum. Can anyone tell me if they are?

They shouldn't be forged . Only the 167 .

That's my understanding as well. 166: Cast. 167: Forged.

Cast and forging are two different processes for making/shaping items out of metals/alloys. Casting is the process of pouring a metal, while in a liquid phase, into a mold. Forging is the process by applying pressure (mechanical or hydraulic) to a piece of metal in order to shape it. There are pros and cons to each process. Casting is more economical and less time consuming, whereas forging is more costly, but creates a stronger, more uniform, and possibly lighter product.
