German Castrol European Formula 0w-30 at Autozone is as good as OEM oil. And it's $6.99 at Autozone
It's all I used to run in my E30, MB, Audi's and R32 ( try finding Full Synthetic 0W60 5W60, even VW does not stock it)

Order your filters from the following link. They are OEM and a fraction of the price. Shipping is same day.

So after reading the fall issue of 'Fast Times' News Letter.....I'm considering trying Lubro Molly oil. Anyone try it? Bavarian Autosport speaks highly of it....and it is currently the same price per qt as BMW oil....only addition would be shipping cost....
Here's the article......

German Castrol Syntec makes BMW LL Oil.......U.S. Castrol is not fully synthetic. U.S. standards are different. Lubro Molly 5w-30 and BMW LL 5w-30 are equal in price as well as performance. If you find the Castrol Syntec from Germany that's Group IV oil and is a true fully synthetic oil but will be about the same prices. Stick with the BMW LL oil.

Lubro Moly all the way!

btw I use Lubro 10W60 (M oil) on my 545i for more of 1 year and it is great!
How can you tell? Any objective review of oil will include information on engine wear, deposits (sludge, varnish), oil analysis test results, and fuel economy over 10s of thousands of miles. Buy a BMW LL rated oil in a weight specified in the owner's manual for your climate conditions and change it at least as often as your iDrive tells you to and you'll be fine.

I personally doubt that for normal street conditions that there is a quantifiable difference between any of the top oils and BMW LL. YMMV.
