, I deliberately dropped-back and then pulled closer again with the same effect. I had my Xenons on at the time and I concluded that it was this that gave it away. Given that police in the UK all have Xenons I suspect that it is something they could spot quite easily.

The cameras just shoot, that's correct. But when the pics get developed and they can't read the plate, then they take the film and work on the gamma and the contrast, manually. I have seen it myself. They get a clear reading of ALL license plates! And if they have to get back on the film and do some work on it to read the plate, they know you put something on it. And that's illeagal over here.
